What is a candlestick chart?

Candlestick charts consist of candlesticks that represent price fluctuations of a security. A candlestick has a body, top and bottom wicks, and can be green (or blue) and red depending on whether prices increased or declined. One candlestick represents a time period such as a day, a week or a minute, depending on the trading set-up.

Why do traders use Candlestick charts?

Traders use candlestick charts to determine possible price movement based on past patterns. Candlesticks are useful when trading as they show four price points (open, close, high, and low) throughout the period the trader specifies. Many algorithms are based on the same price information shown in candlestick charts.

What does a candlestick represent?

While similar in appearance to a bar chart, each candlestick represents four important pieces of information for that day: open and close in the thick body, and high and low in the "candle wick".
